Cloudy, windy but ok...

Had a good 4 hours down at the plot today and the weather was ok, a bit windy at times but dry.  Continued sorting out the plot today and it is beginning to look like an allotment again.

Today I:

Built another 2 raised beds.  Think I am going to use them for carrots and other root crops
Built a new path using some paving slabs from the new house.
Continued digging over some beds, the ones near the shed are being done at the moment.

I was digging over the middle bed by the shed,, it hasn't been used for 2 years and although the soil looks and feels good there is soooo much couch grass that it is taking a while to dig over.

A reminder that I need to get my seeds going soon,  have also brought my onion sets and might get some of them in tomorrow if possible.

All in all a good day. I enjoyed being down there and it is looking good.  Will try and get some pictures tomorrow.  At home I have started to put more glass in the greenhouse and hopefully we'll have it ready for next week.

An hour after work

Enjoyed spending an hour at the plot after work today.  Didn't do much but almost dug over one of my raised beds and began building another raised bed.

Checked on my garlic.  The over wintering rows look excellent - now hoping they continue to grow, and he row I planted a few weeks ago has begun to sprout.  This weekend I think it is planning time, greenhouse building and also path building...  Should be fun.

First earlies in.

Not at the allotments today but did plant my first earlies in bags today at home. Planning on doing 3/4 bags every 2 weeks or so... Hopefully will give us a supply of new potatoes through May - July..

First Day of Spring

Today I got my seed potatoes, 2 first earliest, 1 salad and 2 bags of main. Started them chitting and might plant some earlies tomorrow in bags at home.

At the plot today I finished digging over the main bed and made another small raised bed. Need to do a bit of clearing to do and sort out the bit by my shed...

Late Winter tidy up

Today I went to the plot for the first time in a few weeks.  After a week looking after my 3 children I needed a break!  It was a sunny day but windy - almost got blown away walking down there...

When I got down I spent an hour or so digging, trying to get the plot ready for planting.  I also checked on my garlic, added another row which I found in the shed and planted my first Broad Bean seeds out.  The picture to the left shows the garlic growing well.

I also decided that it was time to tidy the shed up - it is now looking better and hopefully the big spiders have found other homes!  The challenge is now to keep it tidy.

I didn't go home empty handed though - I picked the last of the sprouts (ok, the only sprouts that grew properly this year) and my leeks to make some soup for work.

All in all a nice morning and I am feeling quite happy about the next year.  I just need to spend a little more time down there.

Jan 2nd - a little planning...

Today I made it two out of two days at the allotment for the new year and therefore a 2nd blog post of 2014 already!  Today it was sunnier and warmer but. The ground was still very soggy - probably too soggy for digging but I carried on as I know that when term starts I'll struggle to get down as much.

I also did a little tidying at one end and need to build a couple of compost bins to go there.  My aim this year is to tidy the place up a bit and make it a bit more efficient in terms of space being used.  More raised beds to stop little ones walking everywhere etc.  Since moving house I have a fair amount of wood etc to use so should be able to make it all a bit easier to look after.

No pics today so another one from yesterday.

The New Year

A damp morning but not too cold and I thought a trip to the allotment was in order.  Because of moving house I have not been down as much recently so a new year, a new start.

It is muddy and wet but we still got some digging and tidying done.  A few pictures to show what it looks like at the moment.
